20230503 – The ferry BALDUR that’s run the service in Breiðafjordur was taken out of service due to biennial maintenance.
Recently it was anounced that a replacement for BALDUR has been decided. As she is a single screw vessel and has had some engine problems in recent years that has been seen as she is not safe vessel.
After her latest engine problems a decission was made that the Icelandic State would find replacement for her with twin screw ferry. After search for offers decission was made to purchase the Norwegian ferry RØST for replacement. She is expected to enter service later this year.
To make the ferry service safer until the replace will take place then the tug GRETTIR STERKI has been located in Stykkishólmur the home port of BALDUR in case of emergency. Her service has so far not been needed.
While BALDUR has been in the slipway in Reykjavík the tug GRETTIR STERKI took assignment to tow the stricken vessel WILSON SKAW that ran aground in Húnaflói to Akureyri where she will be taken into drydock.
